You know what bugs me the most about this election? If it weren’t for that first debate, it wouldn’t even be close. Romney had a disastrous September and the election was slipping away, then he had one lie-laden, but well performed, debate and he’s technically the front-runner.

Because when you’re a Republican, all it takes is one good night. Name one other good moment from the Romney campaign this year… go on, I’ll wait.

Didn’t think so. And this isn’t the first time it’s happened; Sarah Palin is a complete and utter moron, but because of the “lipstick!” winky-winky performance at the 08 convention, her opinion still commands attention. Despite failing in her run as VP, quitting halfway through her term as governor, using speculation for a 2012 run to launch a goddamn reality show, the media still listens to her.

Look at Newt Gingrich, a guy who has never done anything good or decent, but because he put congress back in the hands of the GOP in 1994, he’s still a relevant political figure. Despite numerous affairs, blatant racism and just generally being a terrible person, he came within striking distance of the Republican nomination this year!

This doesn’t happen to Democrats. Howard Dean had one bad night - the infamous “YEEEAAAAAAHHHAWWWW!” moment - and he was never taken seriously as an elected official again.

John Kerry made George W. Bush look like a fool in three consecutive debates but still lost an election has has since remained firmly seated in the most liberal state in the country with little influence on the national stage.

Al Gore. Al Gore was VP for the most successful presidency in over a generation, won the popular vote in 2000, but he loses one election and vanishes from politics to launch a network no one watches. And the right has successfully denied climate change solely based on the notion of “lol, Al Gore is fat.”

And if Obama loses this election, he’ll be thrown out of town and sent to build houses with Jimmy Carter for the rest of his life. Never mind the laundry list of major accomplishments that the “liberal” media refuses to talk about, he’ll just be a loser and loser’s aren’t allowed back in… unless you’re a Republican.

Romney’s entire campaign has been a disaster: 47%, supporting Rapepublicans like Akin and Mourdouch, binders full of women, unleashing Paul Ryan upon the world, rampant lying, flip-flopping on issues in the middle of a debate… but this guy’s winning?

Because of one good night.

"It’s worse to imagine a world with Obama getting a second term than it is to imagine a world without pizza. Because with Obama in a second term, there will be no pizza. For anyone."

- Herman Cain suggesting if Obama is reelected, pizza dies. This man has been invited to speak at the Republican convention, BTW.

Bryan Fischer advocates kidnapping children of gay parents

The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer has sunk to a new, disturbing low with his anti-gay statements. In two separate tweets last night, he called for an “Underground Railroad to deliver innocent children from same-sex households.” In one tweet  he was referring to the sad story of Lisa Miller, who, after declaring herself ex-gay, kidnapped her daughter away to Central America to prevent her former partner from having any custody. (She is still being tracked by federal agents as a fugitive of the law.)

What a horrible human being.

Louisiana school forces girls to take pregnancy tests

In a Louisiana public school, female students who are suspected of being pregnant are told that they must take a pregnancy test. Under school policy, those who are pregnant or refuse to take the test are kicked out and forced to undergo home schooling.

This Stupid Country™

"I know in your mind, you can think of the times America was attacked. One is Dec. 7th, that’s Pearl Harbor Day. The other is Sept. 11th, and that’s the day the terrorists attacked. I want you to remember Aug. 1, 2012, the attack on our religious freedom. That is a day that will live in infamy, along with those other dates."

-

Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa. comparing the birth control coverage requirement under the Affordable Care Act to 9/11 and Pearl Harbor.

Seriously.

To Rep. Kelly, evidently the now no to low-cost proper care and maintenance of ladyparts via preventative care is just like that one time thousands died when terrorists crashed airplanes into the Twin Towers. IT’S JUST LIKE THAT YOU GUYS!

These things have one thing in common: Nothing. I didn’t fly a plane into your place of business or home, killing scores of people, just so that I could get yearly gynecological exams and breast cancer screenings counted as things which must covered. Nor did any other person. So no. It’s not like those dates that really will live in infamy.

See, what happened is this thing called “a law” was passed by elected officials in the U.S. House and Senate. Now bear with me here… after that, President Obama (or, as members of your ilk call him, that Kenya Muslim Socialist Zombie Nazi) signed the law. Then, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law. It’s not like you didn’t know this was coming, bro.

So no planes. No blitz-attack terrorism. Just government doing its thing.

Now, go find a corner, sit in it, and think about what you’ve said. When you’re ready to be a grown-up, we’ll talk.

Black wedding banned by Baptist Church

It was to be their big day, but a Jackson couple says the church where they were planning to wed turned them away because of their race.

They had set the date and printed and mailed out all the invitations, but the day before wedding bells were to ring for Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson, they say they got some bad news from the pastor.

“The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church, and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote him out the church,” said Charles Wilson.

Guess we shouldn’t expect much progress on gay marriage when we won’t even let black people get married.

Why NBC and the American media are an embarrassment

Rather than cut directly to the opening ceremony, NBC opened their evening coverage with Bob Costas consulting Tom Brokaw on the “controversy” surrounding London’s supposed lack of preparedness for the games.

The non-existent “controversy” was, of course, a reference to Mitt Romney’s disastrous tour of London wherein he made a complete ass of himself by accusing the city of being unprepared. The resulting British media shit-storm and rebuke from British politicians was a sight to behold, and not just because we got to eat popcorn while observing from across the pond. It was also magnificent because Romney was flat wrong, and under similar circumstances here in America our media would not inform you that Romney is wrong. They would instead play the role of faux concern troll and ask what “the other side” has to say about it.

I’ll Miss You, Chick-Fil-A

It’s not even worth getting into how, in the year 2012, there are still people with semi-functional cerebral cortexes willing to grovel at the altar of a mythology invented two millennia ago by people who literally knew nothing about anything, and to allow it to inform their prejudices against men and women who haven’t done a damn thing to hurt them. We could be here all day with that one. But what Cathy’s doing is throwing down the gauntlet because he believes not only that he’s right but that his business won’t suffer one bit by demonizing a large segment of the population.

Judging by guys like Mike Huckabee, who’ve rallied around Chick-Fil-A and its, I suppose, God-given right to discriminate against gay people, Cathy may be at least partially right. He knows even a chicken sandwich can be a weapon in the culture war these days; that’s how far-gone we are.

Rick Warren blames the teaching of evolution for the Colorado shooting.
And this fucking asshole is hosting a presidential forum with President Obama and Mitt Romney during the campaign. He does not deserve this kind of authority. He is a lowlife charlatan, nothing more.

More than just the Loch Ness Monster

So yesterday, I posted that article about the Loch Ness Monster being used as proof of creationism in Louisiana schools. Schools that receive taxpayer-provided voucher money, no less.

But while we can all have a laugh at the stupidity of creationists, there’s more in these textbooks:

  • - Only ten percent of Africans can read or write, because Christian mission schools have been shut down by communists.
  • - “the [Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross… In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians.”
  • - “God used the ‘Trail of Tears’ to bring many Indians to Christ.”
  • - It “cannot be shown scientifically that that man-made pollutants will one day drastically reduce the depth of the atmosphere’s ozone layer.”
  • - “God has provided certain ‘checks and balances’ in creation to prevent many of the global upsets that have been predicted by environmentalists.”
  • - the Great Depression was exaggerated by propagandists, including John Steinbeck, to advance a socialist agenda.
  • - “Unions have always been plagued by socialists and anarchists who use laborers to destroy the free-enterprise system that hardworking Americans have created.”
  • - Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential win was due to an imaginary economic crisis created by the media.
  • - “The greatest struggle of all time, the Battle of Armageddon, will occur in the Middle East when Christ returns to set up his kingdom on earth.”

Jesus, Mary, Mother of Fuck… this country is astoundingly stupid.

Christian fundamentalist textbooks touting the Loch Ness Monster as proof of Creationism

One ACE textbook – Biology 1099, Accelerated Christian Education Inc – reads: “Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the ‘Loch Ness Monster’ in Scotland? ‘Nessie’ for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.”

These schools are receiving taxpayer dollars, by the way.
